Reports: Raiders and Jets to be after Jim Harbough Empty Reports: Raiders and Jets to be after Jim Harbough

    Post by Superman55 Sun 30 Nov 2014 - 12:07

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11958347/san-francisco-49ers-make-jim-harbaugh-call-season

No matter how tenuous the San Francisco 49ers' situation currently is, the fate of coach Jim Harbaugh won't be resolved until after this season, according to sources.

If the 49ers can pull off a 4-0 finish to the regular season and make a run in the postseason that some in the organization are still convinced is possible, Harbaugh could land a contract extension, sources said.

He will have one year remaining on his existing deal but has already rebuffed extension offers.

It is no secret that Harbaugh will be a commodity that interests other teams at season's end, like he did last season with the Cleveland Browns -- the 49ers even considered trading Harbaugh to Cleveland.

The Oakland Raiders and New York Jets both are expected to, at the very least, inquire about Harbaugh's availability in a trade, a source said.

One NFL source is convinced the Raiders are the favorite to land Harbaugh, but the Jets also are known to be keeping a close eye on Harbaugh's situation.

fwiw = from one of the insiders on the michigan board. he's a no nonsense guy that doesn't spread rumors and has a lot of good contacts.

"Talked to Harbaugh source this afternoon....
that said he spoke with Harbaugh last night and that after that conversation he now fears that the Jets would be the biggest threat because the talk is they'd be willing to give Harbaugh coach AND GM duties. Any franchise offering to give Harbaugh that level of control will increase their chances in the race."

Good news as far as I am concerned. I wonder if he could work with Idzk as his details guy or would want his own man?

I read last year that Harbaugh was close to Gamble and he wasn't pleased that Gamble left for the Eagles.

Harbaugh is polarizing and supposedly very hardheaded. A lot of 49ers players can't stand him.

Well, that's one way of looking at it. I don't disagree that Harbaugh is a good coach. But this latest development about the 49ers looking to trade him sends up red flags for me. A guy who took this team to the SB and numerous NFC Title games is getting shipped out. There must be a serious disconnect between him and the players and/or the front office.

The reason he may be available is disconnect with the front office. That will not be a problem here as he will be the top dog.

I have no concern about players not liking him. I have had enough of players loving their coach and playing like crap for him.

I'm with you on that front Nick......We do have some talent on the roster that can be developed but the team lacks fire in its belly and a desire to win not just have high 5's with Rex

As much as I would love to see Jim Harbaugh become the HC of the NYJ (and GM, if he insisted on it), we have to bear in mind he is under contract to the 49ers for another year, and therefore there might well be the matter of trade compensation. I wonder if folks would still be gung ho for him if it meant giving up our 2015 1st round pick? I know I would have serious reservations about that sort of price tag, given it could be a top 3 pick.

Hey, sometimes you have to take a big swing, it's worth a shot.

Harbaugh would not be my #1 pick, but what the hell, it's at least an attempt to change for the better, to try to change the equation

Question: (in all seriousness as I don't know)

Historically, if a HC is traded with time left on his contract, what is the usual return for said HC?

IS a first rounder within consideration or is it more likely a later round pick?

    Cheers in advance

There is a precedent in the league for the trading of a head coach. Back in 2002, Oakland traded Jon Gruden to the Tampa Bay Bucs for two first round draft picks (’02, ’03), two second round picks (’02, ’04) and $8 million in cash. Gruden was fresh off a quick turnaround of the Raiders and one of the hottest names in the NFL coaching world. He was a young, fiery coach with Playoff credentials and Tampa opened up the bank to ensure he would be leading the charge of their squad.
The Gruden deal wasn’t the only trade for a coach, although it was the most lucrative from a compensation standpoint. Back in 1969, Don Shula was dealt for a first round pick. In 1997 Bill Parcells was traded from New England Patriots to the New York Jets for a third and fourth round pick in 1997, second in 1998, and first in 1999. In 2000 the Jets returned the favor by trading Bill Belichick for a first round pick to the Pats. Then in 2006, Herm Edwards was dealt from the Jets to the Chiefs for a fourth round pick.

    From your link;

    2. Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco 49ers
Jim Harbaugh’s turnaround in San Fran has been nothing short of remarkable. His fiery coaching style endears him to his players and he’s proven to get the most out of aging veterans and young pups. Harbaugh’s 24 wins and a Super Bowl appearance in two season’s make him the most logical candidate to slot behind Belichick.

    TRADE VALUE: 2014 1st round pick, 2015 1st, 2015 2nd round pick

That's a pretty hefty price tag, but one assume's it would come down a little if the 9ers miss the playoffs this year.

Back to Grateful's question........considering the state of the team now, yes I would pay the price to get him here

According to a twitter link on this page, Hoke will be returning to Ann Arbor in 2015:

    Joe Caporoso @TurnOnTheJets

One less place Harbaugh RT @easye_shonuff: According to sources, Brady Hoke to return as Michigan's head football coach next season.

I suspect those values are just one guy's opinion, and it was written in June 2013, so Harbaugh's trade value now would be a lot lower relative to any assessment from that point in time.

Another question is, would Harbaugh prefer to come to a situation where the team had just depleted a trove of high value picks to acquire him, making his task that much more difficult?

Harbough has done a ton with a C/C- QB. Kapernick is the 19th rated QB with the 24th highest completion %. Even the 9ers were fooled into thinking he was a franchise QB. Watch Kapernick play, the fact the 9ers have been elite with a bottom 12 QB is amazing.

Now, I wouldn't give up any first rd picks for a coach. I wouldn't do it. But I would I give up a 2nd and some mid round picks and a blank check for him? Absolutely. Especially when I know it will take Harbough here for us to turnaround both the culture and hopefully the pathetic recent drafts. Harbough would have enough power to overrule any stupid personnel decisions coming from Idzik/Bradway (still impossible to tell which one is responsible for these terrible drafts, but as 51 always says, its only 2 bad years from Idzik and a lifetime of opportunities from Bradway, so he should follow Rex out the door, IMO, but I blame Idzik for not punting him after last year's draft and hiring his own guy). Still can't wait till Bradway gets a pink slip.

Harbough gets full power, a 2nd and some mids, and if someone wants to give up a first rd pick for Harbough, they can have him and we go another direction. I prefer Harbough, but I'm not giving up a top 5 pick for him...even if the idiots keep making the picks...there's a sun shining on a dog's ass analogy that would be appropriate to insert here for Bradway and Idzik...

That's more or less how I see it. What's the point of getting a great cook and forcing him to make dinner with an empty cupboard?

Anyone know what contractual rights Harbaugh has in terms of blocking a trade? I suppose Jason at OverTheCap.com will address the Harbaugh rumors at some point, but until then it would nice to know how much this topic is just a beat writer or two exercising their imaginations.

I don't know this for a fact but I don't think a team can forcibly trade a coach. The way it normally works is the team lets the coach know he is free to agree on a contract with another team. While or before  that is done compensation is agreed upon by the 2 teams.

...but he can block trades. Reports surfaced earlier this year that Cleveland and the 9ers talked trade for Harbough shortly after the Super Bowl but Harbough wasn't interested in signing an extension in Cleveland; essentially, ending talks.

Nevertheless, the cap room, high picks, and opportunity to pick our next QB may be exciting for Harbough. If there is a guy who could get the most out of A Mariota, RG3, or Winston (maybe even Geno and/or Vick), it's Harbough.

He'd be a good coach to develop a young QB in a simple/conservative offense. I felt he developed a solid Offensive system for Alex Smith and Kapernick.
