Casserly has said on ecord he thinks Rex is a great coach....

We need a guy like Casserly not to keep Rex but he knows how to evaluate players.

I hope this is just a rumor, because Charlie has already been run out of town by the Redskins & Houston. Redskins hate this guy ! Not excited about this hire if true.

Casserly has 17+ years GM experience (Redskins, Texans). He's a pretty good talent evaluator from my experience listening to him on NFL Network. I wouldn't object to him coming here in some capacity.

Probably not a good sign for the entire front office. As the end of the season draws near, I'm starting to doubt Idzik's job status.

He's not here for just Rex, he's here to evaluate the front office according to Sirius.

Casserly is making the call on Idzik and Rex...that should show you how much confidence Woody has in Idzik to make these big time decisions. Casserly may stay in to help with the draft also...which also says something about our "Hall of Fame" GM (the way he's defended on here you'd think he was a hall of fame GM).

How many legit GMs has this happened to?

Casserly is not coming in to run the team. He's coming in to help Woody find the right guys to run the team.

So his jobs as GM in Washington or Houston don't matter as much as his connections around the league.

I'm not sure anyone here thinks of Idzik as a Hall of Fame GM.

That's not how I'm reading it. Supposedly, Casserly will be brought in IF and only IF Woody decides to clean house. That means Casserly comes AFTER Woody fires everybody.

And who said Idzik was a HOF GM? You're resorting to hyperbole now. Those who've defended Idzik, like myself, are not saying Idzik's done a great job. We're saying he hasn't been anywhere near as catastrophic as reactionary fans suggest he has. My defense of Idzik has been less about highlighting his record, and more about highlighting the overreaction of the Torches and Pitchforks crowd foaming at the mouth to blame the GM for this season.

It's Woodys MO to bring in consultants to help him staff his front office and coaching staff. We have see varied results from the different men he has brought in. Let's all hope Casserly has the best results that will lead to building a foundation that will take us to the promised land.

Agreed. Parcells and Polian have both helped historically...not its Casserly's turns.

Yeah, but Casserly also drafted Mario Williams when everyone wanted Reggie Bush or Lienart #1. He also added Andre Johnson to that team and built the Texans into a play-off team before stepping down.

However, he's being brought in because the organization, starting with Woody, doesn't trust Idzik.

Your concern should be why does the organization even want to bring him in? Obviously, someone has burned some internal bridges, or they wouldn't be bringing in someone else to help him do his job...whether you like the guy they picked or not, the bigger concern should be why they brought him in.

I like the fact that Woody is bringing in a guy with a lot of football experience to help him make the right decisions. Casserly has seen it all, and not only knows a lot of people in the business, he also has ridden the ups and downs of an organization going through its cycles of boom and bust. He is will be an eminence grise, which is exactly what is called for here. Last thing we want is a Neil Glat business type standing over Woody's shoulder during the decision process on GM/HC.

The question of whether Casserly will help Woody with the decision on Idzik itself is interesting and not resolved, IMHO. Frankly, I would want him advising Woody on this, as Woody doesn't really have a frame of reference outside of his past experience hiring and firing GM's (Tanny). Casserly will be able to provide another perspective on Idzik's tenure to date and future potential. The 2nd big question is whether the GM they hire has complete authority to bring in a HC, or whether Casserly gets to weigh in on that as well. This is where it gets tricky. Hopefully Woody defines Charlie's role clearly up front and sticks to that path.

There is also the Dick Cheney VP scenario, in which Casserly helps Woody evaluate all the GM candidates, and in the end tells him the best person for the job is...Charlie Casserly.

There are consultants on almost all NFL teams, this does not mean the end for Idzik. I still don't think Idzik is getting fired without bringing in his own coaching staff.

Just a random thought, but maybe Woody is bringing in a consultant to say that Idzik deserves more time. If Woody did that on his own, certain segments of the fan base would burn the place down.

I agree with the sentiment that Woody has already made up his mind about Rex and his coaching staff and Idzik (all gone on Black Monday, IMO). Casserly is being brought in to help identify coaching/GM candidates, and determine how significant the bloodletting should be, i.e Scouts, front office, especially the holdovers from the Tannenbaum regime.

Hard to believe Woody would bring in a guy to evaluate his entire team (which is the role of the GM) and not fire Idzik. Teams do bring in consultants all the time but in most cases to help with the draft/free agents or provide knowledge they may have about other teams. I don't believe this is for those purposes.

One thing I think is guaranteed is the new person will be a football guy as opposed to a financial guy. Having done that twice should have made Woody conscience of his mistakes.

from what i've read, Casserly is being brought in to help Woody with hiring a new coach and/or GM if Woody decides to make a change. maybe this is a matter of semantics, but it doesn't sound like Casserly will help Woody evaluate Rex and/or Idzik. although one can deduce that Woody wouldn't bring someone in to help hire a new coach and/or GM unless Woody has already decided to replace the existing coach and/or GM

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/12067453/new-york-jets-eyeing-charley-casserly-consultant

Casserly won't be part of the evaluation of Ryan and Idzik. Sources stressed that Casserly would be retained only if Johnson decides to replace Ryan and/or Idzik, but the fact that he reached out to Casserly is a strong indication the Jets are preparing to start over.

one thing to look out for is that Casserly serves on an nfl advisory committee that is charged with helping teams identify coaching and GM candidates, especially minority candidates. so i think this may increase the odds of a Todd Bowles or Pep Hamilton (who i think are 2 very worthy candidates, regardless of skin color)

I think everything Hobson says here is 100% spot on. We don't know who is going to be replaced and how long Casserly will be here, but his profession is replacing Head coaches and GMs...not a good sign for either...even if we keep Idzik, woody trusts Casserly with helping Idzik replace Rex, which is t a strong endorsement of Idzik. The fact he even contacted Casserly says beyond of what MAY be coming.

Cy'r right, Casserly may be here to spoon feed Idzik and help clean house, but the fact Johnson didn't trust Idzik to do it on his own after sitting in the chair 2 years is telling.

I do think the likelihood of the entire front office being let go is more likely than Idzik staying.

This offseason is already starting off with a bang, the guillotine already is assembled, and the line will form shortly.

I think those who think Idzik won't deservedly be in the guillotine line are in for a rude awakening. They generally do not bring in a short term replacement (which is what this looks like)...unless you're going to be replaced. I believe the writing is on the wall.
