Sean McDermott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Early yearsEdit

McDermott is a 1993 graduate of La Salle College High School, where he was named All-Southeastern Pennsylvania at defensive back in 1992. He was also a national prep champion wrestler in both 1992 and 1993. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in finance while at the College of William and Mary, where he was an all-conference safety (1997), and also receiving Academic all-conference honors in 1996 and 1997, and NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-America accolades. Sean played safety alongside future All-Pro NFL safetyDarren Sharper.

    Coaching careerEdit

    Philadelphia EaglesEdit

McDermott originally joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1998 as a scouting administrative coordinator, a position he held until being promoted to assistant to the head coach in 1999. He then became defensive quality control coach and later assistant defensive backs coach. In 2003 he replaced Steve Spagnuolo as defensive backs coach, as Spagnuolo was assigned linebackers coach. In 2004, McDermott saw both of his starting safeties (Brian Dawkins and Michael Lewis) earn Pro Bowl berths for the first time in team history. Under McDermott's watch, Dawkins went on to earn two more Pro Bowl berths following the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

In 2007, McDermott was assigned linebackers coach, after Spagnuolo had left to take the defensive coordinator job for the New York Giants. On January 28, 2008, Eagles head coach Andy Reid named McDermott secondary coach again.

On May 18, 2009, McDermott was named the interim defensive coordinator as a result of defensive coordinatorJim Johnson's medical leave of absence. On July 24, 2009, due to the continuing decline of Johnson, the Eagles announced McDermott would take over as full time defensive coordinator. Johnson died on July 28, 2009. McDermott implemented a variety of blitzes in his defense, thanks in part to his mentor, former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

McDermott was fired as the defensive coordinator on January 15, 2011.2

    Carolina PanthersEdit

McDermott was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers on January 17, 2011.

where are you seeing this sarge?

not surprising to me they are still interviewing people.  you can't put all your eggs in the quinn basket, so even if he is the plan A candidate, you need to have some backup plans.  sort of like the GM search, where maccagnan appeared to be the early favorite, but they still interviewed a bunch of people not even on the initial interview list.

Report: Sean McDermott to interview for Jets head coaching job

The Jets appear to have settled on a new General Manager after spending several days with Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan, but it doesn’t look like they’re ready to shut down the head coaching search.

Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports that the team will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for the job on Wednesday. It’s the first interview that McDermott has lined up since the end of the regular season, which may just mean that he opted to wait until the Panthers season came to an end.

McDermott has been the defensive coordinator in Carolina since 2011 and built the unit into one of the best in the league during the 2013 season. They took a step back for much of 2014, but the defense rebounded late in the year and helped pave the way to a second straight NFC South title. Prior to joining the Panthers, McDermott spent more than a decade in Philadelphia as an assistant and eventual successor at defensive coordinator to the late Jim Johnson.

There have been several reports that Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is the favorite for the Jets job, although it may be a while before things can move forward on that front. If McDermott impresses, the team may not wait to see when this year’s Seahawks run comes to an end.

Interesting, the Panthers secondary has never impressed me and he continues to have a top D. I have thought that has been so impressive from his D. They lost half their secondary last year, no problem. The Panthers also dont spend big on free agency; and again, still a tough/rugged D.

The hard part is how much is Rivera and how much is mcDermott.

I think the Panthers defensive has been pretty solid. Never thought much of the Eagles defense with the 5 wide crap after Johnson passed away. Not sure if that was McDermott. My take on him is about the same as Marrone - ehh...if he was at the top of their list, they would have tried to interview him sooner. I am still hoping it is Quinn. If I had to rank my choices again it would be:

    1. Quinn
    2. Reich
    3. Bowles
    4. Marrone
    5. McDermott

I am not sure why the Jets didn't interview Gase, he must have declined an interview with them. Though that offense looked pretty awful and predictable yesterday.

Manning played with a torn quad, so I am guessing the offense was scaled back.

JMO but anywhere Manning is he is his own OC and there is no way to judge the actual OC. That is the reason I would personally shy away from Gase and glad he didn't get an interview.

He seems to have a strong diversified background. I like what I have seen with the Panthers D. He seems to have come out of nowhere. I am surprised we have not seen his name surface elsewhere before. I like Quinn and would be happy if that works out but I am glad to see a new name surface now that Maccagnan is in the mix.

Top 10 Defense in his 3 years with Carolina... with a terrible secondary.. Sounds familiar and last year they were #2 overall and #2 in pts against as well... This year injuries in their front 7 hurt them.... I like us looking at this guy because his defense is predicated upon the Front 7 scheme and play and we have a great front 7..

Agreed; and as someone said on another thread, you can never put all your eggs in one basket in This league.
