    Post by Superman55 Thu 9 Oct 2014 - 13:15

    ESPN Preview:

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos were absolutely disastrous the last time they played at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Jets have been more of an ongoing disaster, one which has left coach Rex Ryan admitting that his job could be on the line.

Manning has a chance to feast on one of the NFL's worst pass defenses and move closer to another record Sunday when the Broncos try to make this appearance at MetLife much more memorable against the lowly Jets.

Denver's previous game in East Rutherford started with an errant snap that sailed past Manning and into the end zone for a safety, and it didn't get any better for the Broncos (4-1) as they were trounced 43-8 by Seattle in one of the more lopsided Super Bowls.

After setting single-season records for passing yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55), Manning was intercepted twice while going 34 of 49 for 280 yards and one score.

Anything similar appears unlikely against the Jets (1-4), who are tied with Jacksonville for the second-most passing touchdowns allowed (12) and have watched opposing quarterbacks post a 107.5 rating -- the third-highest in the league. New York has also managed only one pick, which matches the Jaguars and New Orleans for the NFL's fewest.

Manning, meanwhile, has 12 TDs, three interceptions and a 109.0 rating while hitting 66.5 percent of his throws for 1,293 yards. After tossing four TDs last weekend, he's five shy of Brett Favre's NFL-record 508 -- a mark he has a good chance to match or break against the reeling Jets, who have lost four in a row.

The veteran quarterback has thrown at least five TD passes eight times in his career, including twice last season. He got close last week while racking up 479 yards and connecting on 31 of 47 attempts with two picks in a 41-20 win over Arizona.

He's still not taking the Jets for granted since they're tied with Buffalo for the league's most sacks (17) and have allowed 320.8 yards per game, including 83.0 rushing.

"This is a stout defense; tough against the run, causes you a lot of pass protection issues, No. 1 in sacks, a lot of three-and-outs," Manning said.

"It's difficult for an offense because they give you a lot of different looks. It's a challenge for us in the passing game and the run game, handling just their physical talent and handling just the different looks they give, as well."

The Broncos' ground game, which ranks 29th at 79.5 yards per contest, may have further challenges after starter Montee Ball was lost for several weeks to a groin injury. He was replaced by Ronnie Hillman, who ran 17 times for 66 yards and should get the nod Sunday.

"We're still looking for that balance every single week," Manning said. "It's a great opportunity for Ronnie. He's played at different times for different amounts, but when you're the starting back there's a different hat that you wear. So we're counting on him. He has a burst that is pretty unique."

The Jets are in a rather unique position, enduring their longest losing streak since a six-game skid in 2007. Getting any closer to matching that slide would only increase the pressure on Ryan and embattled quarterback Geno Smith.

And Ryan is well aware that he's on the hot seat.

"You're right, if that's the case and we don't get this thing on the right track, I don't think for a minute I'll be here," he told ESPN New York 98.7 FM. "I know I won't, but I believe this team will right itself and we'll find a way."

Finding a way must involve putting points on the scoreboard after the Jets managed a season-low 151 yards while being pummeled 31-0 at San Diego last week.

Smith didn't show any signs of progress, completing 4 of 12 passes for 27 yards and a pick before being pulled at halftime in favor of Michael Vick. Fans have been calling for the veteran backup, but he wasn't any better, going 8 for 19 for 47 yards with two sacks.

Ryan isn't wavering in his support of Smith, who was last seen at the Meadowlands shouting an expletive at a heckler following a 24-17 defeat to Detroit in Week 4 that earned him a $12,000 fine. He then missed a meeting before the drubbing by the Chargers.

"Was this thing just an aberration?" Ryan said. "I believe it was."

Smith may have Eric Decker to throw to after he missed a game with a nagging hamstring injury. The receiver can find some extra motivation since he spent his first four seasons with Denver before moving to New York via free agency in March.

"I guess it's weird, just because it's the first time I've been on a different team, going against my former team where I spent four years and made a lot of memories," Decker told the Broncos' official website.

    Florio and PFT:

    Broncos at Jets

MDS’s take: The Jets aren’t as bad as they looked on Sunday against the Chargers. But they’re not good enough to beat the Broncos, either.

    MDS’s pick: Broncos 28, Jets 24.

Florio’s take: Peyton Manning returns to MetLife Stadium under slightly different circumstances, against a slightly worse team. The Jets should set their clocks back to Pacific time for this one.

    Florio’s pick: Broncos 41, Jets 17.

Who will take lead in Broncos backfield?

With starting RB Montee Ball likely out for several weeks, the Denver Broncos will turn to the rest of their RB corps (Ronnie Hillman, Juwan Thompson, C.J. Anderson) for their ground attack against the New York Jets in Week 5.

The Broncos haven't let the proverbial cat out of the bag yet, but most expect Hillman to lead the way Sunday. QB Peyton Manning seemingly implied as much on Wednesday.

"Ronnie has played at different times, in different amounts, but when you're the starting back and running out there in pregame warm-ups as a starting back, it's a different hat that you wear," said Manning, per the Denver Post. "There's no question he has a burst that is pretty unique when he gets the ball in his hands. It's our job to give him space."

Still, Manning expects all of their backs to get involved to some extent.

"You can't do it with just one back in today's game, so we expect C.J. to do his job, Juwan to be ready," Manning said. "Those guys are both young backs, but both act like older players. I think we'll need the whole committee against these guys, and we're trying to get that running game going."

Despite the opportunity to be the lead back of a prolific offense, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical about Hillman's long-term fantasy value during Ball's absence:

    Adam Schefter
Fantasy RBs to pick up this week
"Hillman hasn't ever proven that he can be trustworthy. Now maybe he'll surprise all of us this time, become really productive in the running and passing games, become a PPR machine. One of the three backs is going to emerge while Ball is out -- Hillman, Juwan Thompson or C.J. Anderson -- but I'm not betting on it being Hillman long-term. I think there's a better chance that it'll be one of the other two. The Broncos really need a dependable running back, since Ball hadn't separated himself or become a huge factor yet this season. They really miss Knowshon Moreno. I might put in a claim for Hillman, but I'd be happy with either one of the other two guys. In a 16-team league like the War Room one [Matthew Berry] and I are in, all three should be owned."

    Matthew Berry
Fantasy RBs to pick up this week
"I have Hillman ranked first among those three, because he has the easiest path to fantasy relevance and he clearly has the most burst and explosiveness. I put the pecking order as Hillman, Thompson and Anderson. But it just doesn't seem like he's been able to seize these opportunities in the past."

My guess is the game plan on defense will be similar to last week: six defenders in the box enticing Manning to hand the ball off instead of passing. It will also be a challenge for the defense not to tip off the coverages early. If the offensive game is to play ball control then Geno has to use his legs. That's something I have not seen since week 2. Broncos are aware that Jets want to run the ball. It would not surprise me to see eight or nine defenders in the box.

I'm curious to watch how this team responds to the embarrassment last week on the road. Pride comes to mind. How many games does it take to show a complimentary football game? How many press conferences do we hear the same lines "We have to get better and I believe that we have the players."

The defense has to create turnovers and get off the field. Offense has to get into a rhythm early. I wish these guys would just line up and run plays. All the different looks at the beginning of games every game is frustrating to watch. And the mental errors. We can't get out of our own way. Unfortunately, we have little margin of error to begin with. We don't need to give them any extra possessions.

In years past this would be one of those games that the JETS would win. Key phase years past... This team has problems we all know that and I just don't see how it will not be a blow out by half time... I have had enough of MM play calling which is a joke... I watch but don't expect much ... I am sorry to say.

yeah, something like 44-20.  I think the offense looks a little better this week, but I also think Julius Thomas catches 3 TDs and Welker vs Wilson is going to be a nightmare, and who is going to cover Sanders?  With Walls hurt, who's covering the Broncos leading WR?

    Yeah, we have a problem.

This game has blowout written all over it. I think the Jets might keep it close for a quarter or so. Then, once Manning figures out our defensive game plan, he will start carving up that secondary. He will throw for at least 3TDs this game and maybe more.

Maybe Peyton Manning will fall down in the lockerroom and sprain his ankle. That would help.

The Jets haven't given me any reason to think they'll have a chance in this game, other than the fact that it's a home game. But a few three and outs by our offense, and a TD or two for them will take the crowd completely out of the game.

The Charger game completely took the wind out of my sails this season. The word "awful" didn't even begin to describe what I saw. It was disheartening. Sometimes teams make a drastic turnaround at some point and change the direction of their season.

Unfortunately, I don't see good things in my crystal ball this week. They're a much better team. We needed Jacksonville or Tampa Bay this week. What an insane schedule we got in the first seven weeks.

Really hard to imagine this will be anything but a blowout after the way the Jets played last week. Probably means they will give the Broncos a tough game, convince us they can pull out a victory, but ultimately lose a heartbreaker at the final whistle.

I can remember two era's when it was this bad - Charlie Winner and Rich Kotite. This is the most down I've been on this team during Rex's tenure. Manning is merciless. He much prefers the 1 yard TD throw than the one yard rushing TD. The only question is when the Broncos will pull back. This will be another week of how Idzik ill prepared this team to battle without CB's.

Just wonder how much fight the Jets have in them.
