Had to be done.  You win 4 games in the NFL, you can't be surprised if you get canned.

Rex will go down in Jets lore as a legendary figure, Idzik is probably a decent guy, but he was a bad choice for GM

ESPN's Chris Mortensen: Idzik, Rex fired Empty Re: ESPN's Chris Mortensen: Idzik, Rex fired

    Post by Hunter07 Mon 29 Dec 2014 - 8:41

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Jets will move swiftly and fire HC Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik.

Mortensen reported earlier in the day that Ryan was hoping to get a quick resolution regarding his status, so he can move on to a new job if he’s fired.

Ryan should find some interest as a head coach, but there has been plenty of talk that he could elect to take a job in television and wait a year to see what jobs are available.

It’s worth mentioning that Ryan has ruled out taking a defensive coordinator job.

The Falcons have come up as team that could have interest in hiring Rex as their new head coach, but Mike Smith has yet to be fired.

As for potential candidates for the Jets head coaching job, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports mentioned that consultant Charley Casserly is reportedly “very high” on Cardinals DC Todd Bowles and UCLA HC Jim Mora Jr is viewed as a “very strong candidate” within the Jets.

Some GM candidates could include: Texans scouting director Mike Maccagnan, Vikings assistant GM George Paton, Browns assistant GM Morocco Brown, Houston director of pro personnel Brian Gaine.

Since taking the job in 2009, Ryan has led the Jets to a record of 45-50 (.474) to go along with four playoff wins.

We’ll have more updates regarding the Jets as the news is available.

exactly how I feel... It's a shame because I think Rex will be successful now that he can go to t team that will provide him with some talent offensively. Idzik, good riddance... 12 picks in one of the deepest draft classes I have even seen and if he is lucky winds up with 1 good pick (Amaro) and 1 solid pick (Pryor) and 2 guys on IR (Evans and McDougle) that might be something but where they were picked and over other players showed his evaluation of players is terrible.

New GM gets to hire his own coach and move in a direction together...

Couple good things, no Idzik picks will be forced onto the field (Milliner, Geno, Amaro, Evans, Dozier, IK, Pryor, and McDougle will need to earn PT)...

Chance to see what Coples future is.

The GM and Coach will be on the same page as we move forward, hopefully scheme and personnel wise.

These are good moves. Hoping for Bowles, Linehan, Bevell, or Quinn.

Also hope we a play for Bradford...I'd be okay with Mariota but would prefer Bradford.

    no surprise here.

i've always been a fan of rex and still think he's a good coach. i'm sure he will get another chance, be it this year or sometime soon. but it became readily apparent it was time for a change.

as to idzik, as i've said before, while i'm of the belief 2 years is too short to properly judge a GM, it's hard to argue against firing him. one thing i will add is that when he took over, the jets were in so-called cap hell and seen as a tough job to take over. now we have a ton of cap room and should be able to restock quickly. i don't necessarily want a new GM to come in and throw big bucks around to win the off-season super bowl. that route usually doesn't work. but there is flexibility for someone to come in, lock up the young core, and add an infusion of talent. hopefully some of the draft picks being widely panned will step up and become solid players.

Exactly 54 - If throwing money around worked, - then the late Al Davis would have needed an auditorium to hold all the trophies. - Just "knowing what you're doing" seems to help quite a bit ...

One thing to remember is that we are now in position to go all in and offer a top coach both the GM and Head Coach job if we want

Assuming Harbaugh to Michigan and Gruden staying on MNF, the only coach in that group might be Bill Cowher - maybe a top college coach if you get a good Asst GM, maybe a Bob Stoops, Gary Patterson, or Art Briles

This was the only decision Woody could make and it is the right one. It was time to start over. There will be more firings to come I'm sure as others need to be held accountable for this mess. I'm sure that will come on another day.

    Post by SackExchange Mon 29 Dec 2014 - 10:23

Rex is a good coach, but he has a short shelf life in a place. He is perfect with a talented team, especially on defense and at QB, who underachieved because of a coach who was too disciplinarian or distant. He can come in immediately and breathe fresh air into the team.

But after he is at a place for a while, the guys who used to play hard for him now love playing for him because they don't have to play hard. They don't need to prep for games as hard as other coaches demand of them (see Geno and the movies, Vick and his lack of preparation when he replaced Geno, and Davis' comments about the team's practices). His lack of offensive input hurt him, but even more was his blind faith in his players. Eventually, players recognize that he will have their backs no matter what, and there is no accountability. His faith in his players and his defensive prowess are assets, but both went too far, and ended up hurting him. He may land on his feet in Atlanta, or on a network.

With Idzik, it is impossible to complain too much about the firing. I do think GMs deserve more than two years to fully implement a plan, and that it is impossible to make definitive declarations on drafts after two years, much less one. That said, his long-term plan did not show any consideration for the short term. With all the cap space there was, CB was not addressed. He could have done something more at WR in the 2014 draft, as well. I doubt he has much of a chance to land another GM job in the future.

It became increasingly clear in recent days that this was coming. I'm not shocked at the firings. This is a "show me now" era, and patience has taken a back seat to immediate results. With that said, Idzik was average in my eyes. He made a few good draft picks (Richardson, Pryor, Amaro) and picked up Decker, Harvin, and Ivory in FA/trades. All good moves. But he had to do better with 12 picks last year, and just didn't deliver.

I'm in full agreement with the cap space. I hope some cowboy doesn't come in here with a "spend it all" mentality of overpaying for average talent. That approach will fail. We need to pay guys like Wilkerson first. Spend wisely, don't overpay just to fill a need, and get guys on the scouting team who know talent.

    That's what I'm hoping for.

With the precedent set by this fan base, any new GM will have to use available cap room on veterans. That's just the way it is.

I thought it was a quick trigger on Idzik but I do not have a problem with his firing.

I admit I was concerned Rex still had his spell on Woody. I was very happy to see he stepped up and fired him.

I like Woody, he made the right decision and acted quickly - cut his losses with Idzik. Hiring professional consultants was the right decision. He's not a good speaker / press conference guy, but he comes across as a straight shooter. So, kudos to Woody

Not being a male chauvinist, but when Woody referred to our future GM as a male or female, I about $hit ! Could you imagine if Woody hired a female as our GM ?

With that said, I sit here eating crow for Idzik being fired. It's not that I'm a Idzik homer, as much as I'm a huge believer in CONTINUITY ! We never handled the Idzik hiring correctly. Rex should have been fired 2 years ago, so Idzik could bring in his own coaching staff. I honestly feel that he did not get a fare shot as being our GM.

My major concern today is the future of the Jets ? I am not a huge fan of Charlie Casserly and know nothing about Wolf Jr. ? But Woody is giving these guy's the reigns to find a new GM & HC. Woody also said, if a HC comes first, it does'nt matter if the chicken comes before the egg ! Wrong Woody, you hire a GM and let him bring in his own HC, that's the best way to right this sinking ship.

Back to continuity for a second, did Jerry Jones fire Jason Garrett when things sucked for the Cowboys, no he stuck with him and he now looks like a genius. Someone count how many GM's & HC the Jets have had in the last 20 years ? Excessive turnover or bad reputation, will keep the cream of the crop from joining such a dysfunctional Team. I'm trying to remain positive, but I'm concerned.

    Go Jets...Cyborg

I posted this on another thread - Heard some names being thrown around for our GM candidate on NFL channel which Woody said today will be a football personnel guy.

    Ryan Pace - NO Saints
Trent Kirshner - Seattle (doubt he goes there again)
Will Mcclay - Dallas (my favorite because he knows the value the offensive line plays in success)
    George Payton - Minn
    Morocco Brown - Cleveland
    Chris Ballard - Chiefs
Mike Maccagnan - Houston (Charlie Casserly has ties to Houston)

it shouldn't be a surprise.....Rex likely feels he has proven enough to warrant a HC job, but the big thing was Rex saying he is not going to be hired to run someone else's defense........he wants nobody to tell him how to handle the D or overrule him.
