    Possible 2015 Jets Quarterbacks

    Post by Superman55 on Tue 7 Oct 2014 - 14:29

With it looking like the Jets will be in the market for a new starting quarterback for next season, Post NFL writer Bart Hubbuch breaks downs the top candidates:

    Quarterback prospects

    1. Marcus Mariota, Oregon: Might go No. 1 overall, so the Jets will have competition.
    2. Brett Hundley, UCLA: Certainly looks the part physically, although his ability to be a pocket passer remains to be seen.
    3. Jameis Winston, Florida State: Undisciplined and too much off-field baggage, but boy, is he talented.
    4. Trade: The free-agent crop next winter is horrendous (think: Blaine Gabbert), but the Jets could look into a deal for Matt Barkley or — dare we say it? — Johnny Manziel.
    5. Connor Cook, Michigan State: A bit of a dark horse, although QBs from this school seem to be playing pretty well in the NFL these days.

I haven't watched these QBs a lot.  But Hundley to me looks very erratic.  Mariota looks like the real deal in terms of raw physical talent.  Winston, forget it. He's a head case.  Connor Cook is interesting.  What about Hogan from Stanford?  Is he eligible this year?

We could be waiting two more years to find our QB.

Since I am new to the site, and haven't seen the entire list of threads, I went to the bottom and saw this one right after reading the article.

I've ignored all of those posts.

Yesterday, it was Johnny Football may be a Jet in 2015...now Mark Sanchez. I don't even read that crap. Rolling Eyes

I see a pick happening. More likely than a trade. My guess is that Mariota is off the board by the time the Jets pick (and yes, I do think they win enough down the stretch to hurt their draft status). Without him, and with the questions about Winston, that leaves Hundley, Cook, Petty, Mannion, guys like that as possibles. I could see a second rounder used, if someone they liked was on the board - depending on the WR and CB decisions.

...you think they'll draft a WR?

With Decker, Harvin, and Kerley counting $25 mill towards next year's cap, you think they would draft a WR in rd 1 or 2 also?

I know Cy thinks we will. I dont think there is any chance we go WR unless Harvin doesnt work out.

Bart Hubbuch obviously doesn't watch much college football. If he did he would know by now that Hundley will require MASSIVE coaching to be an NFL QB. Think early Randall Cunningham without being as talented - the run first mentality. That's Hundley. First sign of trouble he bails. A lot of his completions are short with the WRs doing the work for yards. He's basically very limited and doesn't read coverages well. I've watched a lot of his games....was a UCLA my whole life up until my alma mater finally got football.

btw........not sayin', but keep one eye on Taylor Heinicke-ODU. He's quickly catching the attention of scouts because he makes good decisions with the ball - something that is vastly missing with QBs coming out of college these days. He'd be a later pick, and size is a question mark.....but I love watching this kid with the ball. He's got no o-line this year....his WR corp is all freshman/sophomore except for Vaughn..but the kid stands his ground, takes hits, scrambles when necessary and is accurate. I've never babbled on the kid before but I've watched him mature and he is impressive. I will secretly pull for the Jets to draft him and let him earn a chance.

I used to like Hogan a lot, but not so much anymore.  He didn't look good vs UCLA or in his bowl game last year (I was excited to see him vs Dennard).

Then you look at this year, and he's been horrible on the road with 1 TD and 3 INTs and completing 55%.

That is always telling to me of a college QB, Teddy Bridgewater suffered from this in college as well, I don't believe in college QBs that can't play on the road.

That tells me a lot about a player going against inferior talent.  If you're an NFL caliber QB, you look like it no matter which parking lot the fight takes place, because you belong in the NFL, you look like it no matter where you go.

Bridgewater, Matt Barkley, and Hogan all have terrible road records and stats in college, which tells me they arent the guy you want in hostile environments or on the road in tough conditions.

There was a time that Hogan really interested me, and he has a better throwing motion than some names ahead of him (Hundley, Mariotta, etc), but I think he needs a lot of work and wouldn't be ready for prime time for a year or two, IMO.

    Worst QB list ever...

Try putting Bryce Petty and Shane Carden on that list instead of Hundley and Winston.... I like Winstons skills and talent but he is a headcase and we don't need that sh*&!!

Lose #4 all terrible QB's, with the exception of Johnny Football ( to early to tell) and maybe substitute that with Cousins....

#5 is OK I would add the kid Mannion from Oregon St as well.

I agree with you. They don't go WR unless they let Harvin walk. Maybe in a later round, but they have Evans and Enunwa and long-term WR projects.

Harvin stays, no WR in the draft.

When I mentioned the WR decisions, it was dependent on Harvin staying or going. That is a decision they need to make. Keep him, probably don't draft WR. Let him walk, and they may.

that wasn't the original question......... I've seen pairings like Fitzgerald/Boldin miss the playoffs because other aspects of the team are lacking.

I am rooting for him to improve enough to deserve the starting job. My thinking is even if that is the case we need to be in the market for another young QB to put in the pipeline behind him.

I am not happy going forward next year with Vick and Simms behind Geno and am willing to invest a 2nd or 3rd round pick if necessary to accomplish that.

Seaver - this is an awesome questions and I really wonder what you and HYATT think.

WR cores don't get you in the play-offs, IMO, no matter how good they are. That Arizona team referenced below also had Breaston, to go with Fitz and Boldin, they had posession, speed, and a consistent hands...they never sniffed the play-offs outside of the Warner years; on the other hand, Bruce, Holt, and Hakim were awesome (that Faulk guy was pretty good too).

Anyway, I do think that is a B+ WR group that is play-off caliber and better than most WR groups that will be in the play-offs.

Here's a question, would you rather have:

    Decker, Harvin, and Kerley

    or

    Golden Tate, Baldwin, and Kearse

i.e. #1-3 Wrs for last year's super bowl champs...

I am of the mindset that B+ might be slightly generous. I certainly think it's a B-, and probably a solid B. To me, that is absolutely a playoff caliber WR unit, especially if you factor in Amaro.

With Harvin added we will obviously see if he can be the playmaker Tavon Austin was for Geno Smith, in which some scouts touted Geno as the #1 overall pick in last years draft.
In saying so, i see this ship going in two distinct directions:

1-Geno seizes this opportunity and finishes this season with a winning record, knocking John Idzik's possible thinking of drafting a QB in the top 5 in 2015. This as well would help Rex stay with another contract extension looming.

2-Geno doesn't elevate his play with an excellent supporting cast and the Jets wind up with a top ten slection where Idzik may have to pull off a trade to move up and select a franchise QB to go along with his new head coach.

As much as i bashed Geno, the table is set for this guy to prove all the doubters wrong and become our franchise QB this organization has been searching for. The rest of the season can be had. The team, even the CB's aren't as bad as many think, we've been in every game except for one. Geno could possibly turn many heads if he goes into the bye with a 4-6 record then having two eratic teams in Buffalo & minnesota to get this team back at .500.

These 9 weeks will be very telling if the future for Geno will stay here in NY.

IMO, Andy Dalton is an average QB who just got paid a ton of $$$$$, simply because he has multiple threats @ WR:

    1) AJ Greene
    2) Greg Little
    3) Marvin Jones (I.R.)
    4) Mohamed Sanu
    5) Brandon Tate
    6) Dane Sanzenbacher
    7) James Wright

I don't think Harvin, Decker, Kerley, Salas are enough weapons for Geno or someone else to be a playoff WR corp.

I would like to focus on the draft in the 2nd round for the best WR available. Just think if we had a Sanu, Robinson, Lee, or Moncrief all 2nd-3rd round steals.

And to answer 55's question above, I think CB should be our # 1 concern in the draft. I am still one of the few who thinks Milliner (when healthy) is good enough to be our # 1 CB. Let McDougle, Walls & our 2nd round pick battle it out for # 2 CB and slot CB if Kyle Wilson bolts in free agency. I seriously doubt Idzik would ever not cover all his mistakes by being short @ CB or WR next season.

What would you do if Jameis Winston QB is sitting there when the Jets are on the clock. Pound for pound he is more talented than Mariota or any QB in this years draft class. I hope Geno finally gets it, and plays like he did in the Patriot game. I don't want to draft another QB with our 1st round pick.

Any older free agents out there, that are better than Vick ?
