The Coaching possibilities for Jets next season

The coaching possibilities for Jets next season

    Coaching prospects
    1. Jim Harbaugh, 49ers head coach: Lots of people around the league think he’s certain to leave the 49ers. But would Woody Johnson get into a bidding war?
    2. Greg Roman, 49ers offensive coordinator: If you can’t get Harbaugh, Harbaugh’s highly respected play-caller wouldn’t be a bad backup plan.
    3. Adam Gase, Broncos offensive coordinator: Lots of buzz, but your grandmother could look good calling plays for Peyton Manning.
    4. David Shaw, Stanford head coach: Harbaugh’s successor is smart and always seems to be in demand in the NFL.
    5. Pep Hamilton, Colts offensive coordinator: He gets a lot of grief from Colts fans for his sometimes-wacky play calling, but Hamilton is well thought of in league circles.

What about Settles DC and wasn't Greg Roman a Jet coach at one time?

I definitely believe Quinn is the one to keep an eye on. IMO, if Harbaugh is out in San Fran (reportedly due to not ony issues with the gm, but also the players can't stand him), he'll be on top of Michigan's wish list.

We need a coach with balance. Taskmasters don't last because players tune them out quickly(Mangini...... Woody hated his paranoid ways as well), and coaches who don't enforce structure/discipline(while still respecting the players......... Herm & Rex) are not going to be able to field quality teams who don't shoot themselves in the foot.

I'd have to think any potential coach list would include Darrell Bevel and Dan Quinn from Seattle.

Harbaugh is a long-shot to come to the Jets. if he leaves SF, there will be too many other teams after him. I don't see him coming to any team unless he is given full control. of course, I'm personally hoping he ends up at his alma mater, but think he stays in the pros. but if so, I don't see the Jets as players for him.

and if he leaves SF, I'd think Roman will be first in line for that job...unless David Shaw continues to follow Harbaugh and takes over him in SF after he took over him at Stanford.

not to go too off-topic, but has Franklin already lost his luster? I thought it was a strong hire, given the circumstances

I just really liked O'Brien...he was awesome. And Franklin is doing well recruiting; but again, not like O'Brien. I don't think Hackenberg and Franklin are on the same page at all...too bad we wont have a shot at Hackenberg either. No

I am surprised Bevell and Quinn were not on the list. From the college ranks, another coach I hear mentioned sometimes is the coach at Texas A&M. I have no opinion of him one way or the other, but he is supposed to be a lot like Mike Tomlin. I would take that..

I am going throw out a couple of other names here too - Brian Billick, who was a good coach and won a SB with the Ravens. He's been out of the game for a while, but might want back in. I think he would be an interesting choice. I think the Jets need someone that has been around the block as a head coach to steady the ship...I have no idea if he would be interested in coaching again, but he is someone that in my opinion might be worth an interview. He put a great staff together there in Baltimore.

The other coach that might be of interest is the Arizona Defensive coordinator, whose name escapes me right now.

One name that may shake free, and I think he's an awesome coach whose GM has let him down the last 2-3 seasons, is Mike Smith in Atlanta.

I do not have a top candidate for the job at this point but I do have my theory on replacing coaches.

I like going for the complete opposite type of coach. If I am firing a players coach I want to bring in a disciplinarian. If I am firing a coach with a defensive background I want to bring in new coach with an offensive background.

So I would like to see an offensive minded no BS taskmaster as our next HC

I agree with Nick too. We have had defensive coaches for a long time. And while I think defense still wins championships, I think we need to find an offensive mind who is a tough coach, like a Jim Harbaugh to lead this team. I would be happy with a Defensive coach that is a task master, and a great offensive mind as the offensive coordinator. But my preference would be an offensive coach.

After failing in his first go round as HC, I wonder if Josh McDaniels would be considered? I'm not saying I want him, just curious.

    This.

I don't know how Quinn and Bevell were left off any list for the Jets. They're both going to be hot candidates for any opening, but especially for a team GMed by Idzik.

How often does Idzik do what you think?  Did you think he'd sign the most expensive FA WR to hit the market?  Did you think we'd draft a 3-4 DE after already drafting 2 in rd 1?  How about drafting a safety when we needed a CB and WR with Dennard still on the board?

I fully expect to use our top 3 pick next year on a left tackle and our head coach to have no ties to Seattle...

Truth is - a "change of scenery" might be just what Rex needs. - While it probably won't be as a head coach - he'll be picked up by another team with no problem, won't need to make any calls.

well no one knows what idzik would do if he fires rex. but one would think that if a writer is compiling a list of potential candidates, that he would include the most obvious candidates, being the ones with ties to idzik. i'd think there is a lot better chance bevell or quinn are the next coach (if we make a change) than jim harbaugh. unless woody dumps idzik as well and gives harbaugh complete control, because that is the only scenario i see harbaugh coming to the jets.

No argument there. They should be on the list. I'm not arguing that. I didn't make the list though, and I'm sure those guys would get interviews. I'm just saying he never does the obvious...

@RichCimini: Obviously, you are referring to Ryan's comments on the radio, saying he expects to be fired if the team doesn't turn it around. He's right, he will be fired, barring a 180-degree turn. But there is no chance they will hire Jim Harbaugh. First of all, I don't think Harbaugh would be interested in the Jets. Secondly, Idzik probably would hire someone he knows from a previous stop. That's why I think Seattle Seahawks' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn would be the leading candidate.

Marty gets away from running the ball - where the hell is powell who frankly seem a hell of alot better the CJ2 or CI, where are the screens, why doesn't he line up that usless CJ2 wideout and use his speed, why doesn't he throw more to TE, etc. This play calling sux and his use of personnel is just as bad...
