I don't understand how the video made his pathetic and cowardly act worse? Hitting a woman is a minor thing when there's no video but a huge thing when there's a video? Very hypocritical of the NFL in my opinion. Didn't we already know his actions were repugnant and dastardly?

Goodell has realized he completely screwed up with this. He messed this one up bigtime. The video is simply a visual reinforcement of a cowardly act of domestic violence, that has shocked our collective sense of basic human decency. The hair stood up on the back of my neck watching it, and my stomach became sick.

Goodbye Ray Rice. Don't bother coming back you scumbag.

IMHO, Goodell is a Las Vegas Bookie driven commissioner. Changing all these rules for ticky tack penalties just so the refs can control the rythym of the game. Yet when it comes down to clear judgement, he's is horrendous.

4-game ban for smoking Marijuana, where it's legal in some parts of the nation-you get 4 games for the 1st offense and a year long for the 2nd.

6 game ban for hitting a woman? Then all of a sudden he admits he fouled up when he saw the outrage. Then again he tries to rectify himself when he witnessed the video yesterday? Really?

Let's be honest, the NFL saw the whole thing in February. Goodell is just a horrible commish that has no idea what brand he wants to promote in the NFL.

Ray Rice most likely is done in the NFL

Posted by Mike Florio on September 9, 2014, 9:37 AM EDT
    Ray Rice
    AP
America loves a good redemption story. The NFL loves one, too.

But Ray Rice most likely won’t be getting one.

At a time when the term “distraction” somehow has become a bad word in the NFL, Rice presents a distraction that no coach will want to tolerate. It won’t take many players in any given locker room to create a critical mass that makes it impossible to welcome Rice to the team, and few if any teams ever will have few enough dissenters to justify giving Rice a job.

Rice’s shot at redemption becomes undermined in three ways. First, Rice apparently lied to the team and the league about what happened in the elevator, creating the apparent impression with the Ravens that a punch wasn’t even thrown. Second, the video becomes indelible and undeniable; if video had existed of Mike Vick drowning or electrocuting dogs, for example, it would have been hard for the NFL to give Vick a second chance.

Third, and most importantly from a football standpoint, Rice plays a position that has more supply than demand. With six years of wear and tear and signs of diminishing skill, teams will opt in all cases for a guy who doesn’t carry a big, nasty pile of baggage into the building.

For Rice, the best and only hope could be the Patriots, given the whole Rutgers/Schiano connection. But even if Bill Belichick wants to give Rice another chance, owner Bob Kraft — who once abruptly rescinded the rights to fifth-round draft pick Christian Peter based on his record of violence against women — probably would block it from happening.

So it’s likely over in the NFL for Ray Rice.

Extended version of Rice incident shows spitting, obscenity

Posted by Darin Gantt on September 9, 2014, 8:35 AM EDT
    Ray Rice, Janay Palmer
The NFL might not have been able to obtain a copy of the Ray Rice punching his wife in the face video, but the Associated Press did.

And the copy they saw shows more of the startling confrontation between the former Ravens running back and his then-fiancee Janay Palmer.

The extended video included audio, and Rice and Palmer could be heard shouting obscenities at each other. She appeared to have spit at him before he knocked her unconscious with a straight left.

The video was shown to the AP Monday night on the condition of anonymity “because the official isn’t authorized to release it.”

(Note to NFL Security: Try this method in the future.)

The extended video showed Rice dragging Palmer out of the hotel, and staff members at the now-closed casino saying “She’s drunk, right?” and then, “No cops.” Rice didn’t respond at that point.

While any more footage won’t change the visceral reactions to the initial viewings of punch, the fact it’s available to news organizations is an interesting idea.

Just when one could feel that an issue regarding the handling of this was finally resolved, we now have an investigation of the investigation. I hope they'll find out the whole truth and fix this so everyone learns that it won't be tolerated.

I have a somewhat different theory.

The league knew about the video, and received it. But they didn't want to look at it, so they could protect themselves.

So they go and give Rice two games. Then the PR tidal wave comes, and Goodell is getting blasted in the court of public opinion for being too lenient. The league needs a reason, an excuse, for increasing the punishment and trying to save face, so they conspire to have the tape leaked, knowing they could then hand down a bigger penalty.

This also isn't the first time Goodell has played around with tapes. You know, like how, after already punishing the Pats for their initial incident, the league went to the Pats' facility? They didn't find anything worth increasing the penalty, but they saw that other tapes were destroyed. Not sure how that worked. If there was nothing on those tapes, why destroy them? And if there was something on them, since the league destroyed them, why was there no more punishment?
