    Urban Meyer ?

Post by cysporsche on Tue 13 Jan 2015 - 11:00

With the latest rumors of Dan Quinn being pursued by John Elway & the Broncos and John Fox looking @ the Bears job, does it seem to you guy's that Doug Marrone is the only coach seriously interested in the Jets HC job ? I'm tired of the rejection, especially from all the retreads !

Let's make a splash with Urban Meyer who just won his 3rd College Championship with the Ohio St. Buckeyes. Urban (50) is currently making 4 million per and IMO, he has to be itching for the next big step in his coaching career in the NFL ? Let's take a look @ his resume:

1985 - St. Xavier High School coaching DB's.
    1986 - Ohio St. coaching TE's.
    1987 - Ohio St. coaching WR's.
    1988 - Illinois St. coaching OLB's.
    1989 - Illinois St. coaching QB/WR's
    90-95 - Colorado St. coaching WR's.
    96-2000 - Notre Dame coaching WR's
    2001 -02 - Bowling Green Head Coach (17-6)
    2003-04 - Utah Head Coach (22-2)
2005-2010 - Florida Head Coach (65-15) with 2 National Championships
2011 - ESPN (health related issues)
2012 - present Ohio St. Head Coach (38-3) before this years Bowl games and 3rd National Championship

Before this years Bowl games, you have to be impressed with his (141-26) record, which is now higher than a winning % of .844. He is also 11-2 in Bowl games. I know he's from Ohio, and has a great freshman & sophomore class returning next year; however, let the Jets be the first NFL team to interview him and make him an offer ? I don't care about him running a spread offense or offending people along the way, the guy is a winner. If the Harbaugh brothers can translate to great NFL coaches, why can't Urban Meyer ? cheers

Why not Sarge, he has nothing left to prove in College. Interview him and test the water, you never know ? I know one thing, I'd rather have a rookie HC like Meyer, than some left over like Doug Marrone. I like Quinn, but now the Bronco's are in the mix, and would you rather coach the Broncos or Jets ? Plus Quinn has no NFL HC experience either.

No, please, stop. How many elite college head coaches have shown success does not translate? Holtz. Spurrier. Nobody was more elite than Nick Saban when he came to the NFL.

The NCAA allows for shady coaches to succeed by circumnavigating recruiting rules. The NFL locks down that stuff. No way would it work in the NFL.

seriously cy? why won't you ever address the concerns i've raised about meyer.

you post the same stuff over and over, but never respond when people question you on it. as i was watching the game last night, i knew today we'd get yet another call for you to hire urban meyer. and once again, you won't address any issues i've previously raised about him.

i'm too tired to repeat them for the umpteenth time and too lazy to try and find the prior posts, so i'll start with the most basic one - why do you want a coach who runs a spread offense and has never developed a pro QB?

Urban Meyer is the next Steve Spurrier.... A great, absolutely GREAT college coach... But I just don't see him as an NFL coach... He is great with college kids I don't think he will relate to NFL players and his version of the spread offense is very wildcat'esque.. Its more about the run than the pass like Chip Kelley's and I don't see that offense flying the NFL either.

ok, thanks to the wonders of google (hobson54 urban meyer - oddly it was on the jermaine cunningham thread) i was able to track down my length comments on urban meyer. so cy, i ask you to respond to my posts since you are the one who started this thread and discussion on urban meyer as a possible coach for the jets:

first and foremost, he does not run a pro offense. he likes big, mobile QBs who run some version of a read option offense. he won his national titles with tim tebow. i want a coach that will run a pro style offense and develop a pro style QB. alex smith is the only QB he coached that has had some modicum of success in the nfl, and that took a lot of coaching up by coaches harbaugh and reid to develop him into a pro QB.

second, i am not sure he will be able to relate to and coach adults. he is great in college where he is able to lord over 18-22 year old kids. it's a different ball game in the nfl dealing with grown men playing for big dollars. there's a reason very few lifelong college coaches succeed in the nfl. i look at chip kelly as the exception.

third, why would he leave ohio state for the jets (or any nfl team)? he makes a ton of money and has absolute control over his program and has built a powerhouse that will be able to compete on the highest level for championships. you think he wants to deal with the NY media and jets fans and take over this franchise?

fourth, he is a sleazeball of the first degree. now maybe that's not unusual in the ugly world of college football. but in the nfl, you can't grab all the top kids. teams need to play by the rules. so i'm not so sure he would have as much success where the playing field is level and the talent is spread so evenly. or in the case of the jets, where there is currently a disparity in talent vis-a-vis the top teams.

fifth, he has already "retired" once due to health concerns.

I will simply say I do not think he has any interest in moving to the NFL and I would not want him if he did.

Jet brothers, I strongly disagree with numerous remarks above about Urban Meyer.

Hobson54 & Sarge's loyalties lay with Michigan & Alabama, so any barbs thrown out from them are more sour grapes rather than the truth.

We won't have to worry about Urban's dishonest or shady recruiting styles, because he won't be recruiting anymore kids to his College team.

You call it a spread offense, but based on the last 3 Ohio State games I've watched, that looks like NFL formations to me, not gimmicky like Oregon or Chip Kelly ?

Why can't a soon to be 51 professional College HC, coach NFL players, that's a ridiculous statement. He acts very mature and top of his game to me

He only makes 4 million per @ O.S., so $$$ are not out of the question, if you want one of the best.

And why do people keep saying that College HC don't translate to NFL HC ? You can't compare every potential HC to Nick Saban or Steve Spurrier. Every Man & HC is different.

Whether you guy's agree with me or not, I think Urban Meyer will eventually get a shot in the NFL, and I'd rather it be with the Jets than some other team.

cy, with all due respect (not that you showed me any...sour grapes my arse), i have to question your knowledge of pro football if you don't think that ohio state is running some spread option type of offense and that is a pro attack.

cardale jones ran the ball 21 times last night and most of elliott's runs were on read option plays where the QB decided whether to give the ball to the RB or keep it himself. on the year, jt barrett ran the ball 171 times and cardale jones ran the ball 72 times. that's 243 runs by the QB, compared with 331 runs by the top 2 RBs (elliott and samuel). last year carlos hyde was their leading rusher with 208 carries. braxton miller (the QB) was next with 171 carries. in 2012, braxton miller led the team with 227 carries, to carlos hyde's 185.

let's look at florida. in 2009, their leading rusher was tim tebow, with 217 carries. next was jeff demps with 99 followed by chris rainey with 89. in 2008 (their last title year), tebow led the team with 176 carries, followed by rainey at 84 and demps at 78.

i don't know about you, but i'd rather have an offense where my QB isn't my #1 or #2 leading rusher.

as to urban being a sleazy recruiter, you are right, we wouldn't have to worry about that in the pros. but the flip side is that the talent is much more evenly distributed in the pros. urban can't just recruit the best players. he has to deal with teams that have equal, if not better talent than him. which is why the transition from college, where the best coaches have the best players, to the pros, where the talent is spread more evenly, is extremely difficult.

So I guess Urban Meyer is not smart enough to transition to an NFL offense ? I thought he'd hire a good O.C. to help make the switch. A good HC can coach anyone anywhere. One of my best College coaches came out of the H.S. ranks, and he was the best coach on our team.

I still have not heard one proven fact, that would sway me from giving him Urban Meyer a shot ? Sleep

cy, one thing i've learned about you over the years is once you make up your mind, it would be virtually impossible to get you to change it.  so i doubt anyone here can offer you anything that would say you from your urban meyer obsession.

you claim meyer runs a pro offense, then when i show he doesn't, you respond with - well he's smart enough to figure it out and can hire an OC to help make the switch.  i'll take that as a tacit concession that he does not in fact run a pro offense.

of course, whether you want meyer or not is probably irrelevant.  when asked today if he had any interest in leaving ohio state and coaching in the nfl, he said:

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls14/story/_/id/12161485/ohio-state-buckeyes-urban-meyer-says-no-desire-coach-nfl-now

When asked whether he would ever consider moving to the pros, Meyer said: "Not right now. I've got a commitment to Ohio State and these players. I love what I'm doing. Not right now."

Greg, Please don't get mad @ me, this is only a sports chat board, and I'm entitled to my own opinion. I sometimes think out of the box, that's what has made me a good headhunter in the real World ! I won't settle for 2nd best like Cable, Marrone, Kubiak or whomever ? I still think Urban Meyer will make a good NFL HC whether anyone agrees with me or not. I'm usually right more than I'm wrong ! Rolling Eyes

Nobody's mad at you, cy, but you get these ideas, and you just won't get off them. You don't really have any evidence to suggest Meyer would be a good NFL HC, other than he is a good college HC.

How many top NFL coaches have come from the top college ranks? Pete Carroll was an NFL coach first.

To be honest, I am kind of wondering myself if Bowles' reputation as a coach that schemes around his assets means that they will find a place on the DL for Mr. Coples. I think he was miscast as a OLB.

My only concern about Bowles is that his pass defense was ranked 28th which sucks ! I'll be real curious who his D.C. will be ? Not jumping up & down about Chan Gailey as our O.C. ? Both Bowles & Gailey worked together with the Flippers and even though Bowles was the interim HC for 2 games, he got passed over ?

Back to the Falcons, their 2 top candidates were Rex & Bowles, oh well they blew that ! I wish rex had gone to the Falcons.

Whoa Jet brothers, if Bowles is hiring Kacy Rodgers the DL coach from the Flippers as our new D.C., Kacy is a 4-3 guy, not a 3-4 guy !!!?

Rookie GM, rookie HC, rookie DC and our new OC has been retired the last two years. Hope it all works out before the pitch forks are pulled out and the bon fires start !
