Giants declared WR Odell Beckham, OL Adam Snyder, OT Charles Brown, DE Kerry Wynn, OL James Brewer, DT Markus Kuhn, and DT Jay Bromley inactive for Week 1 against the Lions.
Giants MLB Jon Beason (foot) is active, as expected, while Jameel McClain will start at strong-side linebacker. Beckham was ruled out late last week. The Giants seem to be targeting Week 3 or 4 for the first-rounder to debut.
Justin Gilbert - DB - Browns
The Browns are considering scaling back rookie RCB Justin Gilbert's playing time after a rough opener.
Gilbert got smoked for three touchdowns in the preseason, before getting torched for 97 yards in Sunday's opener by Markus Wheaton. Gilbert remains an excellent long-term prospect, and it's not out of the ordinary for rookie cornerbacks to struggle. But he's not a starting-caliber player at the moment.
Jeremy Hill - RB - Bengals
Bengals OC Hue Jackson said Monday that he specifically approached rookie Jeremy Hill following Sunday's Week 1 win and told Hill he "will be playing more going forward."
The 55th overall pick in May's draft, Hill only played ten snaps against the Ravens while Giovani Bernard handled 57. Jackson promised that won't be the "standard split" of playing time in future games, but it was dictated at Baltimore because Jackson "didn't think Hill (was the) best fit for Sunday's game plan and situation." Beat writer Paul Dehner expects the Bengals to "run the ball more" moving forward, after playing pass-first shotgun offense in Sunday's victory. Dehner still anticipates Bernard getting "20 touches a game."
Jadeveon Clowney - LB - Texans
Jadeveon Clowney is out 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his knee.
The Texans will move forward with Whitney Mercilus and Brooks Reed at outside linebacker. A former first-round pick, Mercilus has been a disappointment with Houston. The No. 1 overall pick in May's draft, Clowney's loss is a huge one for a Texans defense that was built on his edge-rush ability combined with J.J. Watt's dominance on the line. For fantasy matchup purposes, Houston's defense should not be feared for enemy skill-position players moving forward, despite holding Washington's dysfunctional offense to six points in Week 1.
Jake Matthews - T - Falcons
Falcons LT Jake Matthews (ankle) is undergoing an MRI on Monday.
Oh boy. It's a sign the Falcons are fearing a high-ankle sprain, which could sideline Matthews for over a month. That's not a hit Atlanta's undermanned offensive line could afford to take. Matthews' status will be updated later Monday.
Cody Latimer - WR - Broncos
Cody Latimer was held without a catch in Week 1 against the Colts.
Latimer didn't see the field, with Andre Caldwell getting all of Wes Welker's snaps. The Broncos used Montee Ball and Julius Thomas in five-wide sets over him. Latimer remains an intriguing WR5/6 stash, but is going to need time to develop.
Carlos Hyde - RB - 49ers
Carlos Hyde rushed seven times for 50 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco's Week 1 win over the Cowboys.
Hyde was used as a breather back for starter Frank Gore, but was allowed to vulture a four-yard score late in the second quarter. That could be a running theme this season. One of the league's top handcuffs, Hyde offers RB4 appeal as a standalone back.
Mike Evans - WR - Buccaneers
Mike Evans secured 5-of-9 targets for 37 yards in the Bucs' Week 1 loss to the Panthers.
We noticed Evans running routes in the slot, where his size creates mismatches. He had a fourth-quarter touchdown negated on replay. The usage and targeting of Evans was promising, even if his final stat line wasn't dominant. He tied Vincent Jackson for the Buccaneers' team lead in targets. Evans is a WR3/4 in re-draft leagues and a borderline WR1 in Dynasty formats. Evans will be in the WR3/flex discussion in Week 2 against St. Louis.
