Odell Beckham - WR - Giants
Giants declared WR Odell Beckham, OL Adam Snyder, OT Charles Brown, DE Kerry Wynn, OL James Brewer, DT Markus Kuhn, and DT Jay Bromley inactive for Week 1 against the Lions.
Giants MLB Jon Beason (foot) is active, as expected, while Jameel McClain will start at strong-side linebacker. Beckham was ruled out late last week. The Giants seem to be targeting Week 3 or 4 for the first-rounder to debut.

Justin Gilbert - DB - Browns
The Browns are considering scaling back rookie RCB Justin Gilbert's playing time after a rough opener.
Gilbert got smoked for three touchdowns in the preseason, before getting torched for 97 yards in Sunday's opener by Markus Wheaton. Gilbert remains an excellent long-term prospect, and it's not out of the ordinary for rookie cornerbacks to struggle. But he's not a starting-caliber player at the moment.

Jeremy Hill - RB - Bengals
Bengals OC Hue Jackson said Monday that he specifically approached rookie Jeremy Hill following Sunday's Week 1 win and told Hill he "will be playing more going forward."

The 55th overall pick in May's draft, Hill only played ten snaps against the Ravens while Giovani Bernard handled 57. Jackson promised that won't be the "standard split" of playing time in future games, but it was dictated at Baltimore because Jackson "didn't think Hill (was the) best fit for Sunday's game plan and situation." Beat writer Paul Dehner expects the Bengals to "run the ball more" moving forward, after playing pass-first shotgun offense in Sunday's victory. Dehner still anticipates Bernard getting "20 touches a game."

Jadeveon Clowney - LB - Texans
Jadeveon Clowney is out 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his knee.
The Texans will move forward with Whitney Mercilus and Brooks Reed at outside linebacker. A former first-round pick, Mercilus has been a disappointment with Houston. The No. 1 overall pick in May's draft, Clowney's loss is a huge one for a Texans defense that was built on his edge-rush ability combined with J.J. Watt's dominance on the line. For fantasy matchup purposes, Houston's defense should not be feared for enemy skill-position players moving forward, despite holding Washington's dysfunctional offense to six points in Week 1.

Jake Matthews - T - Falcons
Falcons LT Jake Matthews (ankle) is undergoing an MRI on Monday.
Oh boy. It's a sign the Falcons are fearing a high-ankle sprain, which could sideline Matthews for over a month. That's not a hit Atlanta's undermanned offensive line could afford to take. Matthews' status will be updated later Monday.

Cody Latimer - WR - Broncos
Cody Latimer was held without a catch in Week 1 against the Colts.
Latimer didn't see the field, with Andre Caldwell getting all of Wes Welker's snaps. The Broncos used Montee Ball and Julius Thomas in five-wide sets over him. Latimer remains an intriguing WR5/6 stash, but is going to need time to develop.

Carlos Hyde - RB - 49ers
Carlos Hyde rushed seven times for 50 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco's Week 1 win over the Cowboys.
Hyde was used as a breather back for starter Frank Gore, but was allowed to vulture a four-yard score late in the second quarter. That could be a running theme this season. One of the league's top handcuffs, Hyde offers RB4 appeal as a standalone back.

Mike Evans - WR - Buccaneers
Mike Evans secured 5-of-9 targets for 37 yards in the Bucs' Week 1 loss to the Panthers.
We noticed Evans running routes in the slot, where his size creates mismatches. He had a fourth-quarter touchdown negated on replay. The usage and targeting of Evans was promising, even if his final stat line wasn't dominant. He tied Vincent Jackson for the Buccaneers' team lead in targets. Evans is a WR3/4 in re-draft leagues and a borderline WR1 in Dynasty formats. Evans will be in the WR3/flex discussion in Week 2 against St. Louis.

Well, I wouldn't say lights out. Maybe if he made that pick 6. He's going to play lights out in some upcoming games, but I'd give his Sunday performance a C+/B-. It's passing, not great, not bad. Dropping an easy pick 6 makes scoring him higher hard to do, for me anyway.

Browns may “scale back” Justin Gilbert’s playing time

Posted by Josh Alper on September 9, 2014, 7:53 AM EDT
Cleveland Browns v Pittsburgh Steelers

Only one of the Browns’ two first-round picks saw the field in the team’s loss to the Steelers last Sunday, but cornerback Justin Gilbert didn’t appear to be any more ready for prime time than quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Gilbert, who played on 83 percent of the Browns’ defensive snaps, was targeted often by Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers found good success throwing his way during a 30-27 victory. He also picked up a penalty that wiped out another penalty on Steelers receiver Justin Brown and generally looked overmatched in his first NFL action.

Coach Mike Pettine acknowledged Gilbert’s struggles on Monday and said that the team would “maybe scale back” Gilbert’s reps in Week Two. Pettine won’t bench Gilbert altogether, saying “there is no substitute for playing” and that he doesn’t want to totally erode Gilbert’s confidence.

“There’s that fine line of what’s best for the team, but at the same time, you still want the kid to get some confidence,” Pettine said, via the Akron Beacon Journal. “It’s tough. Life in the NFL for a rookie corner is tough. There’s not many, if you go back through the years, that have come right out of college and been special right out of the gate. You walk that fine line of, ‘Do we play him?’ I think we’re going to try and find that middle ground.”

Aaron Berry and K’Waun Williams would be options to take some of Gilbert’s playing time. Berry didn’t play a snap in the opener and Williams is another rookie, so there’s little guarantee that they’d turn in a better performance against Drew Brees and the rest of the Saints offense.

Eric Ebron - TE - Lions
Eric Ebron played on 18-of-68 snaps in Monday night's win over the Giants.
Brandon Pettigrew started and was used on 58 percent of the Lions' plays, with Joseph Fauria getting 29 snaps. Ebron is going to be more involved as the year progresses, but he's just a deep stash in re-draft leagues. His best path to playing time could be at slot receiver over Jeremy Ross. Ebron was held without a catch on two targets in his debut.

Cody Latimer - WR - Broncos
Cody Latimer played zero snaps against the Colts in Week 1.
The Broncos compensated for Wes Welker's absence by kicking Emmanuel Sanders into the slot and using Andre Caldwell (42-of-77 snaps) as an outside receiver when they went three-wide. The Denver Post has reported that Latimer is coming along nicely, but he's not quite up to speed in the no-huddle offense. The second-round rookie is only a deep stash now, especially with Welker having a chance to get his suspension reduced.

Martavis Bryant - WR - Steelers
Martavis Bryant (shoulder) is practicing in full this week.
Bryant missed the Week 1 opener with a sprained AC joint he suffered in the preseason. The 118th overall pick in May's draft should make his debut Thursday night against the Ravens. He has no re-draft value as the No. 4 receiver.

Dri Archer - RB - Steelers
Steelers RB/KR Dri Archer (ankle) did not practice on Tuesday.
He was downgraded from limited on Monday. Archer was forced from the Week 1 opener against the Browns with both ankle and knee injuries. Archer isn't much of a factor on offense; he returned two kickoffs before going down.

Tajh Boyd - QB - Free Agent
Free agent QB Tajh Boyd worked out for the Bills.
He's also expected to work out for the Panthers on Wednesday. It's the first we've heard of Boyd since he was cut loose from the Jets. The Bills would be a good landing spot for the sixth-round rookie, as they don't have a No. 3 quarterback, and aren't sold on E.J. Manuel. Boyd should land on a practice squad before a 53-man roster, however.

I was so wrong about Benjamin. Cy and I have been talking about this for weeks with our NC connection and we both love him now after hating him through the draft process.

Seriously, he's a super good kid who is working his butt off. He also moved in with Cam and and they do everything together (even taking vacations, trips to ATL, everything). They have become like brothers. I am very proud of Benjamin's approach to the NFL and I hope he's a stud. I really think he is making a great transition to the NFL. I think he'll be a top 3 WR from this class.

In other news, Beckham isn't practicing again this week and is projected to miss week 2 also.

Falcons looking for “clarity” on Jake Matthews’s status on Friday

Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews remained out of practice on Thursday after injuring his ankle in last week’s victory over the Saints and the team will try to make a determination about his availability for Week Two during Friday’s practice.
Falcons coach Mike Smith said that the rookie will test his ankle on the field on Friday in hopes of showing he’s well enough to play against the Bengals.
“We are going to have clarity on that by the end of the day,” Smith said on 92.9 The Game, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “Jake has been working with our guys in the training room. He’s going to come out and do a little work on the field.”
Smith also said that it is a “long season,” which may be a sign that watching wide receiver Roddy White struggle for weeks last season after returning too quickly from an ankle injury has left the team more cautious about rushing players back into the lineup. That might be especially true when it comes a first-round pick heading into his second NFL game since aggravating the injury could hinder his development over the course of the year.
Gabe Carimi would start if Matthews doesn’t get the green light and you’d imagine the Falcons will give him some help against the Bengals pass rush in hopes of keepingMatt Ryan upright for most of the game.

Browns notebook: Browns rookie defensive back Justin Gilbert seeks improvement after “tough love” from teammates

RELATED STORIES

BEREA: Browns rookie Justin Gilbert is not losing confidence, and neither is his coach after the first-round draft pick struggled in his NFL debut last Sunday in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers defeated the Browns 30-27 and, in the process, made Gilbert look ordinary from his cornerback position.
“I think he is looking to bounce back,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said Thursday as the Browns continue preparation for their home opener at 1 p.m. Sunday with the New Orleans Saints.
“He has gotten some tough love from the DB room. I think coaches can only do so much. He knows what our expectations are. We are not necessarily a staff, and I don’t believe in being degrading to a player and jump him and get all over him that way.
“He understands that he doesn’t want to let down the rest of the guys in the room. And they will make him aware of that as well. That is why we have [Pro-Bowl] veterans like Joe [Haden] and Donte [Whitner], just to give them the task of, ‘Let’s get this kid right.’ ”
Pettine expected Gilbert to struggle, but he is hoping he will get into a groove soon.
“You gotta walk that fine line between getting him out there and getting him playing and getting better, and balance that between potentially hurting the team,” Pettine said.
Gilbert said he learned a lot from the going against the Steelers.
“There were some mistakes made in that game that I can learn from, so just getting in the film room and trying to go from here [is important],” Gilbert said. “I am trying not to make the same mistake twice. That is something we have been working on in practice.”
Gilbert downplayed Pettine’s comments about “tough love from the DB room.”
“I am not sure what he means by that,” Gilbert said. “I am going to have to ask him so he can clear things up with me.”
Gilbert was clear, however, on why Pettine said earlier in the week that he’ll likely see his plays reduced Sunday.
“The way I’ve been playing, I can understand why he said that,” Gilbert said. “There’s nothing I can do about it but go out on the practice field and work my tail off, and when it comes time in the game, I have to make a play.
Haden said his advice for Gilbert is “be ready” and “expect the ball is coming to you.”
“We all let him know that we are in it with him, and to just keep your head on straight and keep grinding and keep working,” Haden said.
“We know this is a tough league and we are going have your back. We just want to see the effort, just the push, the fight and the grit. Don’t ever give up, don’t ever look down, just always keep fighting and keep pushing.”
Whitner understands quarterbacks are likely to target receivers Gilbert is defending.
“Playing corner is one of the toughest positions you can play in the National Football League, and whenever you are a top 10 pick — and I went through this my rookie year being a No. 8 pick — expectations are so high,” Whitner said.
“Really, to have one or two balls caught on you is really almost unacceptable. To go out and give up almost 100 [yards], you know, really, we don’t think it’s acceptable and he understands that. He has to work on getting better but we are going to help him as much as we can — Joe, myself, our DB coach [Jeff Hafley].”
Reinstatement looming?
If the NFL Players Association and NFL agree to a new drug policy that would lift the season-long suspension of Browns All-Pro wide receiver Josh Gordon, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan would try to insert him into the lineup right away.
“If Josh was able to play this week, I’d like to get him out there,” Shanahan said.
The NFL’s receiving yards leader a season ago certainly would help if he were eligible.
“We want him back really bad,” Haden said. “That’s a big part of the team. We just have to keep it going. Whatever the process is, if he comes back, everybody is going to welcome J.G. back with open arms. We’d be super happy to get him back to help the team, but right now, we’re just focused on who we have and what we’ve got going. Our offense is going pretty well. J.G. would definitely help us.”
Safety Johnson Bademosi is the union’s player representative for the Browns. According to multiple reports, a vote among the 32 player reps could be on the horizon.
The Denver Post reported Thursday that the vote will be held Friday.
“We’ll vote on it soon,” Bademosi said. “It’s collective bargaining, so [the union and league are] still going back and forth between a lot of details.”
Bademosi didn’t know when a vote would take place. He hopes the vote passes and that Gordon would be reinstated, but he’s not certain how anything will play out.
Modifying the plan
All-Pro tight end Jordan Cameron missed practice for the second day in a row due to a shoulder injury, which has Shanahan bracing to face the Saints without a key weapon.
When asked if the gameplan would be drastically affected if Cameron can’t play, he said, “Yeah, it affects how we look at everything. When you put together a game plan, a third-down package, everything you do it affects it — who you want to get the ball to with matchups and stuff.
“I’m used to being in this situation. A lot of times you never know who’s going to be up, so you’ve got to have plans for both and make sure when it is a game-time decision and things like that that you’re not depending on the decision.”
Regardless, Pettine said the offense must execute better.
“The up-tempo is a weapon, but it is not our lifestyle,” Pettine said. “It is something we can use as a changeup, but we are still running the same plays just at a faster pace. We have to be able to execute our base offense.”
Nice job rookie
Pettine said he was pleased with the performance of rookie left guard Joel Bitonio.
“Overall, I thought he run-blocked extremely well,” Pettine said. “He didn’t look like a rookie in his first game. He gave a clear indication that he was the right guy for that job. He has got that spot locked down from here moving forward.”
Bitonio admitted to being nervous prior to the opener in Pittsburgh, but said once the Browns completed one run play and one pass play he felt comfortable.
“As a whole, the line played pretty solid. I felt like I did well,” Bitonio said. “In the run game, I played well and I played hard. The pass game, I think I did well for the most part. There were a couple of little technical things that I need to work on. For Week 1, I think it went as well as can be expected. Obviously, you want to get better each week.
“I am excited for the home opener. The Dawg Pound is going to be there in full force. It is going to be loud and it is going to be exciting.”
Hello Mr. Brown
Browns legend Jim Brown attended Pettine’s news conference with the media.
When Pettine realized Brown was in attendance, he said: “Oh, Mr. Brown. How are you? Any questions?”
Brown replied: “No, sir. Just trying to learn.”
Thomas, Hughes return
All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas and reserve left end John Hughes returned to practice Thursday. Hughes missed the opener in Pittsburgh due to a strained hamstring. Thomas played in the opener and was absent Wednesday to be with his wife, Annie.
“I had a baby girl last night,” Thomas said with a big smile. “It was pretty exciting. Everything went well. Mom and baby are doing good, and I’m back at work already.”
Newborn Camryn joined her older sister, Logan, 18 months old.
Hughes’ status for Sunday was not determined as he was limited in practice.
“You don’t realize what you’ve got until you’re not out there and you miss it,” Hughes said. “I got through all of training camp, played in all the preseason games and then to go down the week of the opening game, it was tough.”
Let’s tackle
Defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil talked about his unit looking forward to playing in front of the Dawg Pound, and improving on its tackling compared to last week.
“We are disappointed with how we came out and played in the first half,” O’Neil said. “It is not up to our expectations. We did not feel like we played like Browns in the first half. I do like how the guys came out of the locker room in the second half.”
O’Neil was asked if he counted the missed tackles in the Steelers game and he said, “Yes.” Then when he was asked how many, he said, “Too many.”
O’Neil said defenders need to keep their “old-school fundamentals.” He praised Whitner and linebackers Karlos Dansby and Paul Kruger for “rallying the troops.”
“We have to get better,” Dansby said. “We have no choice if we want to win. You gotta be able to tackle and get off the field. It is very frustrating, but it is very correctable also. I think we made leaps and bounds today. We were out there tackling today.”
A Johnny package
Brian Hoyer is the starting quarterback, but Johnny Manziel taking the field remains a possibility. When asked if a package featuring Manziel would be used as a change of pace even if Hoyer were healthy, Shanahan said, “Probably not, but that always depends on what you’re going against — what the looks are — how everything is going as a whole. There are really no absolutes, but week in and week out, it has to do with what I see on tape with who we’re going against.”
Extra points
Linebacker Barkevious Mingo did not participate because of a shoulder injury. Defensive lineman Desmond Bryant (wrist) and offensive lineman Paul McQuistan (ankle) each practiced, but were limited. Pettine said the defensive line “is a group we feel is a strength” and Bryant’s return “will only bolster that.” . . . Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor said he still has confidence in return man Travis Benjamin, who had a rocky opener. . . . The NFL fined Steelers returner Antonio Brown $8,200 for cleating Browns punter Spencer Lanning in the facemask Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

There were several high-profile performances to choose from this week, but Bears rookie Kyle Fuller made a prime time impression.
Fuller was named the NFL defensive player of the week, after his two-pick performance against the 49ers.
Those plays sparked a comeback from a 17-0 deficit, and led the Bears back to a road win.
Washington outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan had a four-sack week, but that might have gotten lost in the fact it was merely 40 percent of the team total against Jacksonville (10).

What a mess this pick has been -

Odell Beckham - WR - Giants
Coach Tom Coughlin said Odell Beckham (hamstring) won't play Week 3 against the Texans.
"Not to my knowledge," Coughlin said. "Not with the team." Beckham remains sidelined at practice, and isn't expected to take any reps this week. Preston Parker will fill in as the Giants' No. 3 receiver in place of Jerrel Jernigan (foot, I.R.). Parker (6'/200) has just one catch since the 2011 season with the Bucs.

Benjamin is a classic case of GMs getting so enamored with combine numbers that they forget to look at whether the guy can play football, and his character.  Stephen Hill is a great example.  The guy has great measurables but isn't a pro player at this point.  Benjamin is just a really good football player, who doesn't have the speed numbers you want, but has everything else.

Personally, I was a little unsure about his speed, but liked him generally.  I thought he had great hands, a huge catching radius, and as a possession receiver, he could be a really good player.  I am fine with the Pryor pick, but it looks like the Panthers hit a home run.  We'll see how Pryor turns out.

he reminds me a little of Marshall.  He did have 3 drops this week and a knee injury, but I think he;s going to be special.

That pick was doomed from the start. I really wish Rex would be even more in the background when it come to the draft especially Offensive players
