If Woody interviewed YOU to be the new GM

Post by GratefulJet on Tue 30 Dec 2014 - 0:48

Let's say Casserly or Wolf fat fingered dialing their cell phone, got you by mistake, and somehow since your first name is Trent or Omar or George or whatever, they mistakenly arranged an interview with you for the new GM position!

You say to yourself "self, this is crazy but what the heck, I'm going in there and I'm going to knock their socks off!" What's your game plan? You've got a dysfunctional roster with some foundational pieces on defense, some vets that have outstayed their shelf life, and $50 million in cap space. What is the plan you will lay out for them that makes them say "I don't care how thin your resume is, maybe this is fate, because that's the best goddamn plan I ever heard!"

Here's a good link for upcoming free agents: http://www.spotrac.com/free-agents/nfl/

Me, I'm using some of that cap space to shore up the OL with OG Iupati or perhaps Dan Connolly of the Patriots, the CB position with Maxwell or Thurmond, and a steady veteran QB like Matt Flynn. Maybe a ILB like Brandon Spikes to replace David Harris. Maybe Sam Acho at OLB. I try to bring back Bilal Powell as long as it's reasonable.

Gone: Babin, Vick, CJ2K. Thanks for the memories David Harris. Sorry it never happened Kyle Wilson.

Then I extend Wilk and Sheldon, who are the cornerstones of this team, along with Snacks. Put Coples on notice that this is the make or break year for him.

In the draft, I focus on playmakers with the first two picks. Round 1 I am hunting for the next stud WR, be it White, Parker, Coates. I do not trade down, as it's nice having the pick of the crop near the top of the round, every round. Round 2 I am looking RB: someone like Gurley/Yeldon/Abdullah/Duke Johnson. Maybe Cobb. I'm sure there are others. Rounds 3-4 I am looking OL, LB, maybe TE or S. The rest are defense and depth, plus a sleeper prospect at QB. I don't worry about people saying I reached for somebody. I am not about looking for value picks or developmental projects who will tie up a roster space for the next 3 years and never see the field. I am looking for the best damn football player available every time I pick a guy, someone who can grab a helmet and get out there and hit somebody.

I don't know about head coaches or coaching staff, but I am definitely bringing in someone from a winning program, an up and coming guy who is smart and tough and has seen the formula work. Someone like Quinn makes a lot of sense.

That's my plan, but it probably won't get it done. More importantly, what's yours?

    Cheers great topic Grateful

Let me have a bit of thinking time whilst on the plane from Shanghai to NY! That was one hell of a miss dial from Wolf to hit me!!! lol

Mods to your above plan....(if you don't mind just a few tweaks)

Coples: get the HC to get him back with his hand in the dirt, playing out of his natural position hasn't helped him. I wouldn't say its a make or break year but push him to excel where he excels.

I would look at getting or trying to get Revis back. yes he is a pain each year with his contract, BUT he is still one of the best CB's and I can't see NE picking up his option at 20mm. Even a one year rental would help the secondary no end.

    Draft
Rnd 1 top flight WR (Cooper please)
    Rnd 2 OL
Rnd 3 trade back a couple of slots to pick up another 4th and grab an RB with the lower 3rd
    Rnd 4 OL (ours)
    Rnd 4 OL (from trade)
Rnd 5 SS / FS / Dev QB
    Rnd 6 BPA
    Rnd 7 BPA

I get a QB like Hasselback to compete with Geno for 2015......draft a QB or two to develop. Oh hell....i'll be a homer here.....I'm gonna go get ODU QB Taylor Heinicke. I do wonder how the guy in Seattle feels about him...he has a lot of similarities to Wilson in terms of football IQ, pocket presence/escapability, and size. Russell has the better arm though.

Mainly what I have to sell Woody on is the notion of drafting 2 QBs.........increase the chances of finding 'the guy'.

It's a no-brainer that a QB should be brought in. I would draft one, preferably higher in the draft, and bring in a respectable veteran like Matt Schaub (don't know what his status is with Raiders, but Carr is the long term answer there). As mentioned by others, we need o-line help. Especially interior linemen. I'd explore FA for Guard. If Harvin isn't retained because he won't take a pay cut, I'd look hard at Amari Cooper in round one. I'd also look at a starting caliber CB in FA or via trade due to the uncertain status of both Milliner and McDougle. The rest of the draft can address the linebackers and offensive tackle depth. I think we're set at RB with Ivory and Powell.

Goodbye: Calvin Pace, Dewan Landry, Jason Babin, Willie Colon, Brian Winters, Darrin Walls, CJ2K, Michael Vick, and Chris Simms.

    1) Hire - Eric DeCosta as our GM. He does the work while Ozzie Newsome gets all the credit. We tried to get him before Idzik. Throw stupid money @ him Woody.

    2) Hire - Urban Meyer or Bill Billick as our HC.

    3) Clean out our entire upper Management of our Scouting Department (Jeff Bauer & Terry Bradway) in the Headquarters only. Great field scouts are hard to find, keep them.

    3) Pony up for Mo Wilkerson DE and lock him up long term. Wait 1 year to re-sign Big Snacks.

    4) Spend some of that $$$ in our cap in free agency and sign Revis CB long term and let him retire a Jet, & Lugati G. Let Aboushi, Dozier & Winters fight for RG.

    5) Draft - A lot depends on Percy Harvin. I don't think he is worth 10 million per ? I doubt he accepts a cut ? If he's gone @ WR, how about these options ? Trade up to #2 or #3 and get Amari Cooper, or take our 37th pick and trade to the Browns for Josh Gordon WR. Huge risk for one of the top 3 WR's in the NFL, but keep in mind, he knows it's a one year suspension with his next strike. Dez Bryant got his $hit together. So is it Harvin, Cooper or Gordon, or Harvin & Cooper.

    6) If we keep the 2nd round pick #37 we should focus on OLB, Bryce Petty QB, OT, FS.

    7) I would invite Walls CB & Williams CB to join Revis, Milliner & McDougle.

Cool Players cut - I would keep Powell over CJ2, let Vick, Simms, Conner, Colon, K. Ellis, Babin, Pace, Harris, Wilson, & Landry go.

Cy...why so big on Petty? The guy struggles in the pocket and when pressured.....a bad formula for the NFL.

Seaver, Quite honestly, the only position I'm confused about is QB ? Do with go all in on Mariota and kill our next two years drafts, or wait and see if Winston falls to us @ #6, I think we'd need to snag him if he's there. I would not trade up for Winston

We need to find a good experienced QB that needs another chance like Sam Bradford, Mike Glennon, Blaine Gabbert.

As far as your question about Bryce Petty, I go back to Pete Carroll saying to draft a QB in every draft. Honestly, there is no franchise QB in this years draft, and Petty might be around in the late 2nd, early 3rd round ? He puts points on the board. I would rather have Bradford, Geno & Petty competing, over Geno, Vick & Simms.

And yes, I want Geno back next season. The announcers were talking about Ryan Tannehill QB for the Flippers looking more & more like their franchise QB going forward. Well last year and this year on week 16, Geno smoked him in every category. In both games it was Geno that looked like the franchise QB, not Tannehill. Plus, next year is Geno's 3rd year, the same year that Tannehill's light switch came on. Keep Geno and let him compete.

I agree with your reasoning about taking shots at QBs......I just don't see Petty as NFL material....and certainly not worth more than a 6-7 round/FA signing.

Agree he would be very good choice...

    2) Hire - Urban Meyer ??? maybe or Bill Billick (no like Rex his teams lacked O) as our HC.

    3) Clean out our entire upper Management of our Scouting Department (Jeff Bauer & Terry Bradway) in the Headquarters only. Great field scouts are hard to find, keep them.

I'd help clean out theor desks...

    Indeed and ASAP...

Let Harvin go and forget Gordon..he is a walking time bomb in NYC are you kidding? Go for cooper ...

    6) If we keep the 2nd round pick #37 we should focus on OLB, Bryce Petty QB, OT, FS.

    I am ok with this...

    7) I would invite Walls CB & Williams CB to join Revis, Milliner & McDougle.

I have serious concerns about Milliner's ability to stay helathy...christ he came to camp out of shape. AS for McD I hope he fully recovers so we can see what we have... a

Cool Players cut - I would keep Powell over CJ2, let Vick, Simms, Conner, Colon, K. Ellis, Babin, Pace, Harris, Wilson, & Landry go.

what about your fav give 10 yards to every WR you face and never turn your head Wilson !!!!!

they really need to fortify the secondary. You cannot count on McDougle for anything at this point. They need a legit starter opposite Milliner and in fact should look for a strong backup with Milliner's health history. I'm not sure I hand anything to Pryor either. You can make the case for a complete revamp of the secondary.

Anyone who thinks this team as presently constituted is delusional. I mean the team need help everywhere OL, QB, WR, LB, CB, maybe safety(?). not to mention the scouting department..

the next guys who ever they are have a hell of a job on there hands.

I will go out on a limb now and say this. With the talent the team has now, the amount of cap space we have to tweak the team and the soft schedule we face next season we will be in playoff contention all year.

With the addition of a QB and CB. If those two positions are addressed, the team will be a playoff contender.

Amen Nick ! I don't think some impatient fans realize how close we are ? The Football experts are saying the Jets job is the least desirable job out there, I strongly disagree. I think the Bears & 49rs have already peaked and headed to a down slide.

Like Nick said, with our current roster, Milliner, McDougle, Bohanon, Cunningham, Evans, Salas & Winters coming off our I.R. list, a killer draft and a couple big splashes in free agency, and we will be competing again. I think the NY Jet opening could be a winner for the next HC.
