He's got the size, arm, and just enough mobility to sidestep a pass rush, and he plays in a pro-style offense. If he declares for the draft, he should also be available when we pick. His numbers haven't been off the charts this year, but they're very good overall.  He padded his stats this year against some lesser schools, but put up more mediocre numbers against Big Ten rivals.

I like him, but we're going to have to be extra patient, since all indications are he's returning to school in 2015.

I like him a lot and would draft him in a minute. He fits my QB mold perfectly.

The problem is from what I have heard he is most likely not entering the draft. I hope things change and he does.

No way would this fan base be patient for another year until he comes out.

Is Cook worthy of being a top 5 draft pick even if he does declare ?

Picking a rookie QB is too risky, draft a sure thing in Cooper WR and bring in Bradford or even Glennon off the street to compete. Doubt we sniff Mariota and I'm not sure how Winston will translate into the NFL once he becomes a millionaire ? Money changes people, and Winston is already a cocky crazy SOB.

I'm not so sure Cooper is worthy of a top 5 pick, in fact he wouldn't even be my first choice at WR. If we are in the top 5, I don't think any WR in this draft is worth being picked that high. Instead I'd go with one of the stud LT's, or a pass rushing OLB.

I like Cook too, more of a prototypical QB. I haven't seen enough of his games yet to get a good feel for him. But he seems to have a pretty good arm, stands tall in the pocket, delivers the ball accurately. That's all I can see so far.

I don't think the Jets can gamble and wait until next year because who know where they will be drafting next year. If they are drafting say in the 10th or 12th spot, they might not be able to get him. The Jets need to find their QB as soon as possible, but they shouldn't reach for one either. If they can move up to #1 and get Mariota without giving up the farm, great. They should do it. If not, then they should take the best player available, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. WR, LT, RT, OG, RB, whatever, don't really care. Just pick a player that can play.

they shouldn't 'reach' for any QB no matter the draft spot. Draft for value and figure it out with Free Agency to help. Force feeding a QB just because he's a QB doesn't make sense. Hell, I didn't think Geno in round 2 made sense, but what do I know.

Safest pick to make, but boring ! We need an AJ Green, Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, Jordy Nelson on our team. And please don't say we have Harvin. I like Harvin a lot since we got him, but he's not a true # 1 WR which we need. I can no longer pretend Eric Decker is a # 1 WR, he is a good # 2 WR, but looks average without Peyton Manning throwing him the rock.

Plus, I don't see any tremendous LT in this years draft, that would warrant as a top 5 pick. I think with pick #35, there should still be some stud OL on the big board, but not @ 3. And you know Idzik would never trade back to accumulate more picks.

Our draft room started to fall apart before Idzik. That black scout that bolted out west to the Raiders was the best scout in the draft room. Start the firing with Terry Bradway after Rex.

I absolutley love Connor Cook, but if its between him or Mariota, it's the Oregon product for me. Though Cook would definetly fall to us if we continue to have the 5th overall pick.
IMHO, I feel Cook will declare due to what history has taught many young collegiate QB who stayed an extra year, it's just too risky. His stock is very high now.

Here's the highlights (quality ok) of the Michigan STate vs Oregon game earlier this year.  IMHO, Mariota is above and beyond better than Cook if it comes down to choosing either or.
Not knocking Cook because i feel he is a tremendous talent, but Mariota seems to be extremely focused on getting the most out of his talents.  The guy is arguably the player in College right now and is extremely favorite to win the Heisman.
What he did at 4:21 just shows any doubter what type of phenom the kid is.

fwiw - right now Kiper has Cook as the #4 QB (behind Mariotta, Winston and Hundley) and not on his "big board" of top 25 players (last updated 11/19). likewise, he does not appear anywhere on McShay's big board of top 32 players (also as of 11/19).

I think Cook can be a solid player, although he has some work to do and isn't the greatest athlete. but right now, at this admittedly early stage and just using the 2 most famous espn talking heads as a proxy, he is nowhere in the range of a top 5 pick

Connor Cook, who is kind of an INT machine, has 1 INT on every 23 throws beyond 5 yards, so there's that.

Now have every Jameis game charted but Citadel. 20 charted INT's, one for every 19 throws and 1 for every 11 on those beyond 5 yds.

Jameis doesn't throw spirals, so that doesnt surprise me. He's going to be awful in the NFL.

    From Tony Pauline on draftinsider.net.

Jameis Winston/QB/Florida State: Two years ago at this time when many were anointing Geno Smith as the top pick in the 2013 draft I watched the film and thought “no way.” It was a similar feeling with Johnny Manziel a year ago when most positioned him as a top ten selection. Watching Winston, whom I grade a much better prospect than Smith or Manziel, I feel much the same. Off the field transgressions aside, his play on Saturday’s has been exciting but not the caliber of an early first round pick. His ability to bring the Seminoles from behind is becoming legendary yet many gloss over the fact his mistakes force FSU to play catch-up or kept opponents in the contest. Take a look at the last five games. Four interceptions against Florida on Saturday. An interception against Boston College the prior week which led to game-tying points for the Eagles. A drive killing interception at the end of the first half against Miami. Interceptions thrown on consecutive series against Virginia which the Cavaliers converted into touchdowns. Three interceptions against Louisville. In the end Florida State won all those contests, which was most important for the team, its fans and the national rankings. Yet talk with scouts or next level decision makers who watch the film in its entirety rather than the highlights and they’ll tell you Winston’s penchant for turning the ball over very disconcerting. Talent? Lots of it. Upside? An enormous amount. But also an equal amount of downside risk which is dangerous for any signal caller, especially one who seems to struggle controlling himself off the field.

When the time comes and all the dust has cleared, I still think Cook will be the best of the bunch..his game and NFL body seem to be a perfect NFL fit..sure he doesnt have Mariotas flashy stats but hes not that type of player..a COLLEGE type player that runs a play every 15 secs...and I like Mariota and think he is a more down to earth, smarter Kaepernick...but we will see...but I would also..rather reach for a COOK than over reach for an overrated troublemaker like Winston.....

People have to look outside the college prism and try to translate the game to NFL

In Mariota's case, I do think his game has a good chance at translating to the NFL. He has the size, arm, and vision to be a legit NFL pocket passer. He has the legs to make it happen on the ground, obviously, but that should be considered an attribute, not held against him.

To me, he has the potential of being a pocket passer with legs.

+1 agree, but it looks like he has a strange "hitch" in his throwing motion ?

Once the college season and hype is over, I'd be suprised if Mariota is a top 5 pick come May. These type of QB's seem to be losing steam, as defenses have forced them to to stay in the pocket and read defenses...and I think that hitch in his throw will hurt him when it comes to evaluating him as a future pocket passer.

I don't agree above about the hype for Mariota. I think he will be the #1 pick to whatever team want's to give up a boat load of draft picks to the Raiders for him.

I am flipping again on Jameis Winston. After watching a much more competitive game for the ACC crown, I realized one thing about Winston. HE IS A WINNER. I don't think he's ever lost a game. He was cheering for his teammates, and I saw him running down field blocking for his RB. If he can stay out of jail, grow up & work on his mechanic's, I see no reason why he can't be a good QB in the NFL.
